Ioxus Expands Distributor Network to China, Asia Pacific Region

Growing System of Localized Partners Delivers Sales and Support Coverage to Meet Worldwide Demand for Energy Storage Solutions

ONEONTA, N.Y.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Ioxus, Inc., a manufacturer of premium performance ultracapacitor technology for transportation, alternative energy, medical, industrial and consumer product markets, today announced that it is expanding its sales efforts in China and the Asia Pacific region. Through its recently formed Ioxus Distributor Network, the company is providing technical and marketing support to distributors such as Secotec Ltd, Sinotek, Beijing Favor and Asiacom Technology in China and Lucky Presage and Can-Think in Taiwan. These distributors are meeting the demand for smaller, higher capacity and greater power density ultracapacitors in the Far East and Southeast Asia.

The expansion of the Ioxus Distributor Network in Asia is in direct response to expanding interest in the region in ultracapacitors and hybrid capacitors, specifically in the wind turbine and hybrid bus markets. Wind turbine manufacturers are increasingly choosing ultracapacitors over batteries due to higher cycle life, wider temperature range tolerance and lower total cost of ownership. For urban transit vehicles, ultracapacitors more efficiently manage stop-and-go driving, lowering the levels of toxic emissions and conserving energy during deceleration, acceleration and regenerative braking. Both applications are fueling the call for additional Ioxus distributors in the region.

“We have seen a mounting interest in alternative energy storage solutions from China and the Asia Pacific region, and the growth of our distributor network in that part of the world enables Ioxus to meet that need while cultivating long-term customer relationships,” said Brendan Andrews, vice president of sales and marketing at Ioxus. “Together with our local distributors, we can quickly provide value-added features and custom designed systems with rapid inventory fulfillment.”

“We are excited to work with Ioxus as it enters the local market. The company’s comprehensive range of solutions and its product roadmap have great potential in this part of the world. Ioxus’ sales support and training program have helped us identify more than 20 potential prospects in less than a month, including wind turbine and electric bus applications in China and a redundant power application in Taiwan,” said Sam Wong, vice president of sales of Secotec Ltd. “We look forward to rapid growth in the second half of 2011 when our customers finish their designs and complete their manufacturing processes.”

Representatives in the Ioxus Distributor Network are an extension of the company’s sales force and provide field staff and application engineers who can fully meet the design and implementation needs of regional customers. With multiple distributors in Asia and across the globe, Ioxus is actively increasing its customer base while leading the worldwide market for optimized, cost-effective, green energy storage solutions.

Ioxus Increases Energy Density By 115 Percent with New Hybrid Capacitor

Ioxus is One of Only Two Companies Worldwide With Hybrid Capacitor Technology in General Production

ONEONTA, N.Y.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Ioxus, Inc., a manufacturer of premium performance ultracapacitor technology for transportation, alternative energy, medical, industrial and consumer product markets, today announced it has developed a hybrid capacitor, a combination of an ultracapacitor and a lithium-ion battery, with an energy density 115 percent higher than standard electric double-layer capacitors (EDLCs). Its production of a hybrid capacitor makes Ioxus the only U.S. company, and one of only two manufacturers worldwide, offering this technology.

Ioxus hybrid capacitors are similar to lithium-ion batteries, but they retain a far superior cycle life with more than 20,000 charge/discharge cycles possible rather than the hundreds or few thousand delivered by batteries. The hybrid components offer advantages over standard ultracapacitors, as well, which have an energy density of 12.8 Wh/L. The hybrid capacitor offers an enhanced capability of energy storage, providing power to applications more quickly and efficiently.

“When Ioxus received a federal appropriation earlier this year to work with Binghamton University on increasing energy density in ultracapacitors, we began developing hybrid cells capable of storing significantly more energy than traditional EDLCs,” said Mark McGough, CEO of Ioxus. “The result is our hybrid ultracapacitor, which supports the high cycle, wide temperature range and high power demands of applications like automotive subsystems, memory back-up, LED lighting and other products in consumer-focused markets.”

Hybrid capacitors can be used for numerous purposes, including:

* Flashlights
* LED applications
* Memory back-up
* Portable hand tools
* Solar charge applications
* Off-grid lighting
* Automotive subsystems such as power windows and door locks

Ioxus’ hybrid capacitor offers benefits to industries beyond lighting, given its temperature range of -25C to +60C. At the low end of the range, the hybrid capacitor loses only 5 percent of its energy while comparable battery energy loss would by 50 percent or more. Ioxus hybrid capacitors are 90 to 95 percent efficient, offering far better value than batteries, which only offer approximately 70 percent efficiency.

“The hybrid capacitor supports the mission of clean tech manufacturers across multiple industries who are intent on capturing higher power and longer cycle life with components that also deliver green energy,” said McGough. “The hybrid capacitor is a breakthrough in energy density and power that will fuel the development of environmentally friendly applications in markets from transportation to consumer goods.”

Frost & Sullivan Selects Ioxus for the 2010 North American Ultracapacitor Market Enabling Technology of the Year Award

Prestigious recognition of Ioxus’s accomplishments in the ultracapacitor market highlights company’s module-based approach and speed to market

ONEONTA, N.Y.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Ioxus, Inc., the only U.S. manufacturer of innovative ultracapacitor technologies for military, transportation and alternative energy markets, today announced that Frost & Sullivan has chosen Ioxus for the 2010 North American Ultracapacitor Market Enabling Technology of the Year Award. In selecting Ioxus for this honor, Frost & Sullivan analysts considered several performance benchmarks, including the ability to enable creation of new products and applications and to enhance current products, as well as Ioxus’ potential for market acceptance and the breadth of access to the technology.

“In applications such as hybrid electric buses, wind turbine pitch control systems or grid support systems, energy storage devices are subjected to a very high number of charge/discharge cycles,” said Frost & Sullivan Research Analyst Anu Cherian. “Ultracapacitors are capable of delivering one thousand times or more of charge/discharge cycles than that of batteries, making them ideal devices for high-cycle applications, either alone or in combinations with batteries. Ioxus is not the oldest company in this market, but it is the first to demonstrate the foresight needed to offer an out-of-the-box solution that optimizes space, as well as lowers the total cost of ownership for the end user.”

While batteries are inherently functional energy storage devices, they can be charged/discharged relatively slowly. Ultracapacitors are power delivery devices that are capable of very high charge and discharge rates. Therefore, Ioxus’ ability to meet the needs of a wide range of applications with custom-built or module-based ultracapacitors that augment battery usage was among the strengths Frost & Sullivan cited in detailing its award selection process. Ioxus’ ultracapacitor was also noted as an enabling technology to the growing set of existing and new energy storage applications.

“One of the key differences we saw between Ioxus and its competitors is Ioxus’ control of its manufacturing and intellectual property,” said Cherian, when referring to Ioxus’ formulation and building of its own electrodes. “Based on a keen competitive position in the market, coupled with an exciting and innovative new supplement to the batteries market, Ioxus is the worthiest recipient of the 2010 Frost & Sullivan Enabling Technology of the Year Award.”

"Ioxus is honored to have been named for this award,” said Harvey Wilkinson, Ioxus’ vice president of business development. “We are dedicated to producing ultracapacitors that support cost-effective, energy solutions for all the markets we serve, and we see this accomplishment as affirmation of our module- and custom-based approaches to delivering these products to our customers.”
